Hi guys. You’ve probably seen the post going around about the Dolorosa cosplayer who was harassed at Anime Boston. The fact that this happened at all really concerns me, so I made this video just outlining some con etiquette and some things that are good to know when attending a con. I’ve listed them below, in case you don’t want to listen to me ramble on for seven minutes. 

• Respect all fandoms. Regardless of how overwhelming or uncool you think their series is, respect them. They’re just there to express how much they love a series or game or webcomic, and there is no need to rain on anyone’s parade
• Do not touch ANYONE you do not know without permission. Do not hug or glomp cosplayers without asking first. Costumes (and the person themselves!) can be fragile.
• Do not physically harass anyone! I don’t understand why someone would consider this an okay thing to do.
• Ask before taking a photo. This is happening more and more often in that people take photos of cosplayers without asking. Please ask! It’s polite and it’ll land you a nicer photo.
• When someone says no, they mean no. This goes for any situation, whether it you’ve asked them for hugs, a revealing pose, or fan service. If they are not comfortable with it, don’t push them.
• Similarly, don’t be afraid to say no. Just because you are cosplaying a “sexy” character does not mean you have to do “sexy poses” if you aren’t comfortable with it. You aren’t obliged to hug or touch anybody either, and the person asking should respect that.
• Look out for your friends. I understand that it’s very busy at a convention because there are so many things to see and attend, but be aware of your surroundings. Ward off fangirls before they land a glomp, warn your friends if someone seems sketchy, and your company will likely ward off anyone looking to physically harass a stray homestuck fan.
• Ask for help. This is probably the most important thing on here. Sometimes, you attend cons by yourself, you can’t find your friends, or both you and your friends still feel vulnerable. If you are being harassed or if you feel like you are being followed, approach other groups of cosplayers. Most cosplayers are friendly and are willing to stick with you until you’re in a safer location, if you explain to them that you don’t feel safe on your own. Some of them are more experienced and can alert con staff if you continue to be harassed.

Thanks for reading or watching and I hope this was helpful. I’m sorry for slurring my words or if I got really mom-ish and derpy towards the end- I really want cons to be a good experience for everyone and being safe is part of that.

this is really really really good and every word of it is completely true. i’ve been going to conventions for 8 years and i’ve had at least one experience in the entire rainbow of ‘bad things that can happen at cons’ and this is a great post/video with great advice. and it kind of got me thinking so i’m just going to add my own thoughts.

the rule that should be followed at cons, and the question you need to ask yourself, is “could i get away with this in my day-to-day life?” could you get away with hugging a random stranger on the street? could you get away with shoving or elbowing or doing worse to a random stranger on the street because you don’t like what they’re wearing? could you get away with shoving a camera in the face of a random stranger on the street and taking their photo without asking? etc, etc.

the answer to all of those questions is ‘no’. therefore, they’re not okay at conventions, either.

basically, if it’s not okay in your day-to-day life, why would it be okay at a convention? conventions are not free passes to act like an asshole. it doesn’t matter if you do it because you think you’re among a special group of people who are just like you; the con environment, while a pretty great thing and something a lot of us really look forward to, is not a vacation from real life and basic expectations to be a decent person in society. 

you might have had good experiences running up to and hugging people without warning before. you may not have wound up touching a person who got angry about it, but it’s still not okay, because one day you might run into the person who has a problem with it. i’m someone who really, really despises being touched without permission. if it happens to me, i don’t hesitate to react physically. i will both shove the person off of me and give them a very loud, very angry piece of my mind. i draw attention to it. unfortunately, there are many people who are too scared to do anything but take this sort of thing passively, despite the fact that it makes them massively uncomfortable. 

for everyone’s sake, if you shouldn’t do it in your normal, regular life, don’t do it at cons. that’s all there is to it. make conventions and cosplay a happy experience for every person and every fandom.

A Requiem for Homestuck

So I finished this yesterday after working on it for 7 hrs off and on. Because the idea was bugging me and god I needed to get it out before I went into finals week for school. To be honest, the idea has been floating around to do this for a long, lone time. Heck making videos for multiple fandoms have plagued my imagination every time I listen to this song. So once I figured out how to do video editing with the software I have I knew I’d get there sooner or later. And finally after figuring out how to use the flashes and video mov files this dream has come to realization. So please let me know if the effort I put into this was worth it.

While fair use explicitly applies to use of copyrighted work for criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research purposes, the defense is not limited to these areas.
